We at Palo Alto Egg have been working hard to bring natural, healthy foods to the food service marketplace.  We now have the largest selection of natural food products in the West Coast.  In addition to the 3,000 or so items we carry, an additional 10,000 items are available through our partnership with UNFI  (locally known as Mountain People’s Warehouse), the nation’s largest Certified Organic Distributor.  Our goal is to capitalize on their success in the retail industry and translate the same items you buy at any large natural food retailer but sell them in food service packs.  We add on many new items daily from both UNFI and on our own that work for food service.

Everyone must remember what natural/organic foods are about:

Taking care of our environment

-Pesticides- limited or no use of pesticides

-Crop rotation and responsible irrigation practices

-Renewable resources- non food / paper products not made from trees and which do not harm the environment they came from

-Transportation- close sources mean that fuel used to get the product   delivered is minimized thus helping the air we breathe.

Taking care of our fellow man

-Farmers who grow the foods we eat must make a manageable wage

-Whenever possible, take care of the farmer who is close to the community we live.

Taking care of animals

-Humane treatment of the animals that make our food

-Using products not made from animals

Taking care of our health

            -No unnecessary additives

            -NO Trans fats

            -Low Fat

            -No GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms)

-Low Sugar –only natural sweeteners and no corn syrup

EGGS

Back to our roots- eggs are high on our list.  We are committed to have the first line up of cage free and organic egg products in the market.  Please email sales@paloaltoegg.com for more details.

SHELL EGGS- Our shell eggs come from Glaum Egg Ranch , a third generation family farm right here in the Bay Area in Watsonville .  They are part of Community Alliance With Family Farmers .  We carry two types of shell eggs; cage free and organic.  The cage free eggs are a great way to take steps to insure that the hens are taken care of as well as the egg itself being healthier.  We have teamed up with the nation’s largest animal rights group, The Humane Society of the United States .  On the top of their agenda is the treatment of fowl. You can also see quite a bit of news coverage on this.  Local TV stations like KGO 7 have done many stories regarding the treatment of chickens.  Cage free eggs insure that the chickens are able to live a life free of cages, free to engage in natural breeding habits, and are fed a vegan diet of corn and are NOT fed any animal byproducts and no growth hormones.  The price for cage free eggs is not that exorbitant.  For just a few dollars more per case of 15 dozen, you can serve your customers/clients a much better egg.  Organic eggs have all this but also add that the feed be produced without any pesticides, must be grown in a sustainable manner, and must support the farmers who grow it.  Glaum has the highest level of certification on these eggs.  They have both California Certified Organic Farmers and USDA Organic  certifications.  Please make sure the eggs you get have certifications- many natural foods claim to be natural or organic but are not certified.

LIQUID EGGS- We are introducing a cage free liquid egg that works for food service.  We have a 2/20 lb Bag in Box (never frozen) cage free egg produced by Farmers Organic International .  This product has the highest certification level; Certified Humane .  Again, the price of these cage free eggs are not that high.  Many large company cafeterias and universities have already converted to these.  We will be the supplier to most of the channels.  In a short time, we will have a 2 lb carton that will work for smaller units.  Please watch out – they will be here soon!

SCHOOLS

Schools must be responsible for feeding the children and young adults healthy foods.  We have a huge assortment (and growing) of low fat, no trans fats, low sugar foods that TASTE GREAT and have attractive packaging.  We are addressing two huge hurdles; price and taste.  No matter how good a food product is, if it does not taste good, it will not be purchased.  The natural foods you ate a few years back that were hard to stomach are all but gone. Likewise, if it costs too much, it will not work.  We have the largest selection of healthy snacks that taste great and we are constantly working to lower the price by buying more efficiently.  You will continue to see prices of these products drop in the near future.

BACK OF THE KITCHEN

The next area that has not been given much attention is the ingredients used for food production.  Dairy, flour and grains, sweeteners, spices and condiments will have natural alternatives in food service.  Our goal is to make available much of the conventional food items that your broad liner carries but natural.  Pricing will be a key part to the success of this endeavor.  Without hurting the farmer, we will find ways to buy these products better and thus make them less price prohibitive. Again, please email us at sales@paloaltoegg.com with any suggestions.
